Over the years I have trained several runners, and one thing they have all had in common are foot pains and cramps in their lower legs. Since I have been teaching people barefoot running techniques, I have found that the calves take a greater load while learning this method, which usually leads to major tightness in the calves and occasional foot pain. This is something the body does have to have an adaptation to, so it's kind of like a growing pain towards becoming more efficient.
In this video I demonstrate an effect trigger point release technique with a lacrosse ball to help assist with this problem.
