I feel like I am living in a completely different body to what I was back in 2019. Now that I have experienced what it feels like to decompress my joints, I realise how compressed I was from many years of traditional training. The fact that I was exercising at a squat rack most days and doing 3-4 yoga classes a week, but still got constant back pain had me really confused.
On top of that my ability to deal with stress was poor. I was living in a state of anxiety and depression without realising the direct connection to my poor biomechanics.
Once I prioritised my movement around walking, running & throwing - my back pain went. Changing my light environment, cutting out inflammatory grains from my diet and fasting has also helped improve my sleep / energy and lose around 10kg.
@functionalpatterns has not only changed the way I feel, look, move and respond to stress, but it has also saved my career in the fitness industry. Stefan is hyper mobile which has made structural changes very challenging since he wants to go way past functional ranges of motion. “I play competitive 4-wall handball of which endurance, focus and throwing mechanics are paramount. I use to train doing high intensity videos, traditional lifting & calisthenics, but none of it transferred to my sport in a meaningful way. In handball, the players who can utilize their body more effectively and efficiently while hitting the ball and maneuvering, are the ones who have the most success. I started FP because I found @fpminnesota was near me & because they prioritize running and throwing mechanics. I was apprehensive at first (having not seen their results first hand) but after a few sessions, I was already able to throw the ball significantly harder on my left & right side without feeling any sketchiness in my shoulder. At times during handball swings it would almost feel like my shoulder would flop around in the joint, only held there by the ligaments and tendons, instead of being supported. All the static stability & mobility work I had done did nothing to prepare my shoulders for the dynamic demands of handball. Later on in training I noticed that nagging injuries such has lower back pain & weakness in my left knee started disappearing. I immediately saw the value and committed myself to their process to prioritize my longevity. FP is challenging, not just physically, but mentally in a way that I had never experienced in any of my past training. Over the last few months, I felt how my body & movements were becoming more connected but I didn’t realize to what extent until seeing these changes. I look & move like a completely different person & have better results than when I was training twice as much in the past. Here are results after 9 months of @functionalpatterns Patterns on my 48yo father. I'm very lucky to have the parents I have. Dad is one of the hardest working people I've ever met. Working 14hr+ days 365 days/year for most of his life on the farm left his body pretty beat. Mix that in with throughout his teens and 20s competing at a high level of Olympic weightlifting and you are left with a pretty degenerated body.
In the before video dad is suffering from sciatic pain and lower back pain. After 9 months of training the second video he's moving pain free, he is coiling his body like never before and lost 10kgs. Rudi’s testimonial: “Shortly before I started FP, I had been through some health complications, such as spontaneous pneumothorax, femoral head fracture and retinal tear on my right eye, because of which I had to undergo a surgery. After the last one, I was told by the doctors that I should never load my body physically anymore. However, I knew how important it was for my body to move, in order to maintain its tension and not to become atrophied. I refused to stay stuck at home doing nothing, so I gave a try to FP which I heard about from my friend. Since I started doing FP, my physical condition has improved drammatically. Rudi is one of my hardest working clients, who has never missed a single session since we began training. It took us 7 months of training FP corrective and dynamic exercises before Rudi was able to run without holding to any support. After that point, we were able to work on building gait mechanics. Sometimes compensations/dysfunctions that we have reveal our personalities or our lack of abilities to face and solve the real problems. I don’t think I can change a person’s structure without changing what is inside of them. Still working on it. But this kid is getting more confidence because he knows how to use @functionalpatterns methods to maintain his posture. He is building a little machinist inside of him. That is very encouraging to see.
His scoliosis was getting worse every year. Practicing only one or two days a week wasn’t enough for him. “Growing up I played all sports all the time. Some at a representative level, some not. In my mid 20's I joined the military. After a plethora of parachute jumps and carrying extreme weight over extreme distance my body began to give way. This came in the form of anterior compression of T11 and deterioration between C5/6. My pain scale was 2-3/10 24 hrs a day and would frequently shoot to 7/8 leaving me incapacitated for sometimes weeks at a time. After 5 months of FP with @fpshannonhegarty, my pain scale is ZERO 99% of the time. Occasionally I'll have some dehydration and pain might go to a 2/3. The phenomenal (literally) thing is that the pain dissolves on it's own with no input from me. My gait cycle now is my pain management system. The left pic is 81kg, the right pic is 76kg. To quantify my progress I have been sprinting and measuring my max speed. I have increased my top speed from 28.1km/h to 35.1km/h.”

Here is some progress from my client using functional patterns. He suffered a disk injury after 20 years of compensation from a previous back injury. . This was a very humbling and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to help and learn more about biomechanics. . A couple of key takeaways. 1. Injury prevention is a much easier route than rehabilitation. 2. Consistent stress will be needed even after you are out of pain.
